Opposing view: Clemson beat writer predicts another tight game against Bulldogs

  • 11:24 am Wednesday, August 27th, 2014 by Chip Towers

AN OPPOSING VIEW

Each week during the season we’ll try to hook up with a beat writer who covers the opposing team Georgia is playing to get an idea of the perspective from the other sideline. This week we’ll be getting that view from Larry Williams, who covers the Clemson Tigers for the Rivals website TigerIllustrated.com. I’ve known Larry since he covered Georgia for The Augusta Chronicle many moons ago.

I sent Larry five questions about the Tigers via email earlier this week and he did the same with me. Here then, is what Larry had to say about Saturday’s matchup (5:36 [More]

Richt: Don’t read too much into UGA’s depth chart

  • 3:15 pm Tuesday, August 26th, 2014 by Chip Towers

ATHENS – Peppered with questions about some unexpected names and unusual alignments on Georgia’s depth chart for Saturday’s game against Clemson, coach Mark Richt offered a qualifier during his news conference Tuesday.

“This depth chart, I wouldn’t go too crazy about it right now to be honest with you,” Richt said. “I don’t even know if it’s worth writing anything right now.”

The primary focus of queries centered on the status of sophomore Tim Kimbrough (career 5 tackles), who was listed ahead of preseason All-SEC senior Ramik Wilson at “Mike” inside linebacker. Little-used junior Devin Bowman is also slated as the starter [More]

Ten@10: All 5 Georgia tailbacks will play against Clemson

  • 9:55 am Tuesday, August 26th, 2014 by Chip Towers

THE TEN AT 10:

1. Georgia’s ballyhooed freshman tailbacks Nick Chubb and Sony Michel will both play against Clemson this Saturday. How many actual rushing attempts they get – if any – remains to be seen.

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, echoing what running backs coach Bryan McClendon said on 680 the Fan’s “Bulldog Roundtable” radio show this past Friday, confirmed that all five scholarship tailbacks in Georgia’s offensive arsenal will get playing time in the opener.

“The game will dictate touches and plays,” Bobo said. “That’s really at any skill position. All five are doing well but we’ll know more (closer to the [More]

Rewind: Mark Richt on fatherhood and those issues in secondary

MONDAY MORNING REWIND

1. I went to Norcross on Saturday to catch coach Mark Richt and his friends in the first All Pro Dad Live event at the Long Forum on the Greater Atlanta Christian School campus.

It was a very impactful event with some very impressive speakers, including former NFL coach Tony Dungy, Fox News anchor Bret Baier, NFL executives Mark Dominick and Troy Vincent and former star athletes Charlie Ward and Danny Wuerffel, among others. Of course, comedian Jeff Foxworthy also was there and he brought down the house as usual. Foxworthy was equal parts hilarious and profound in talking [More]

Former UGA great Tim Worley returns to counsel Bulldogs

  • 5:34 pm Thursday, August 21st, 2014 by Chip Towers

ATHENS – Former Georgia great Tim Worley attended the Bulldogs’ practice on Thursday, and he was beaming after getting a look the running back group.

Worley said it reminded him of his time in Athens back in the mid- to late-1980s, when he shared carries with the likes of Rodney Hampton, Lars Tate and Keith Henderson. Each one of them ended up in the NFL, and he expects the same will true of the ones who are currently wearing UGA’s red and black.

“It’s great to see Georgia still has that stable of running backs,” Worley said of Todd Gurley, Keith Marshall, [More]

Video: Richt discusses ‘dress-rehearsal’ practice at Sanford Stadium

  • 8:12 pm Wednesday, August 20th, 2014 by Chip Towers

ATHENS – Georgia coach Mark Richt details what the Bulldogs accomplished during their dress-rehearsal practice at Sanford Stadium on Wednesday. For the first time this season, the Bulldogs operated as a single team from one sideline, practicing their transitions from kicking teams to scrimmage teams and so on.

Revelations aplenty at Georgia’s open scrimmage

  • 11:19 am Wednesday, August 20th, 2014 by Chip Towers

ATHENS – OK, so yesterday was a little unusual in terms of practice coverage. Normally Georgia would conduct a workout, I’d attend the media observation period early on along with other reporters and file a quick report afterward based on what I’d seen, then write some stories based on post-practice interviews.

As coach Mark Richt said, the Bulldogs “tried something different” yesterday. They practiced at Sanford Stadium and invited the UGA student body to come to watch. Thankfully, they invited the media to come as well, but that came with several preconditions. We could not  take pictures or video, we could [More]

Ten@10: Talking tailbacks, Grantham, TV debuts and ice buckets

  • 10:00 am Tuesday, August 19th, 2014 by Chip Towers

THE TEN AT 10

1. I had a brief audience last week with Georgia tailback Todd Gurley, who acknowledged reports that he is currently in the best shape of his career.

“Yeah, I’ve been feeling good,” the 6-foot-1, 226-pound junior said. “I haven’t been really getting tired at all. I’ve been feeling great.”

After an injury-riddled sophomore season, Gurley has been able to participate in every practice and workout since offseason workouts began in February. Coaches Mike Bobo and Bryan McClendon challenged Gurley to exhibit leadership by example heading into what’s expected to be his final year in college. Gurley has been able [More]

Rewind: With camp completed, Dogs shift focus to Clemson

  • 1:51 pm Monday, August 18th, 2014 by Chip Towers

THE MONDAY REWIND

The Georgia football team took off Sunday and Monday after practicing 19 times the first 16 days of August. They’ll return to the field on Tuesday for the final 10 days of preparation for the Aug. 30 opener against Clemson. Here’s what happened over the weekend.

1. Many people don’t realize that when the Bulldogs say they’re in preseason camp, they’re truly in a camp. For the past two weeks, 105 players and select members of the support staff have been living in hotel rooms at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. That ended and they checked out this [More]

Practice update: WR Reggie Davis’ left hand in cast as other Bulldogs return

  • 11:06 am Wednesday, August 13th, 2014 by Chip Towers

ATHENS — Back over at the Butts-Mehre football complex this morning as the Bulldogs conduct practice number 15 of 29 this preseason.  That’s, of course, counting yesterday’s practice, which happened to be conducted in a pool. They are in full pads this morning and will come back tonight in shells to complete the last two-a-days session of camp.

Lots to get to from this morning’s 14-minute media viewing period, most of it on the injury front:

The most notable new injury appears to be Reggie Davis. The sophomore wide receiver had his left hand completely clubbed up in a cast. No details [More]
