Hutson Mason: Bulldogs getting after it this spring like never before

By Chip Towers

ATHENS — Georgia  quarterback Hutson Mason on Friday updated reporters on the Bulldogs’ progress during spring practice. Georgia completed its sixth of 15 practices on Friday and will hold a controlled, game-simulation scrimmage on Saturday at Sanford Stadium. The scrimmage is closed to reporters and to the public.

Hutson's demeanor seems like a throw back to a by gone era. He might be willing to play without a face mask.

Georgia Tech on probation for using ineligible athletes

Updated: November 17, 2005, 6:15 PM ET

Associated Press

ATLANTA -- The NCAA placed Georgia Tech on two years of probation Thursday for using 17 academically ineligible athletes in four sports, including 11 in football.

Georgia Tech, which argued the violations were not intentional, is considering an appeal of the penalties.

"We are disappointed by the ruling of the NCAA Committee on Infractions," said Georgia Tech athletic director Dave Braine. "Yes, mistakes were made, but they were inadvertent and confined to a small number of cases when you consider that we reviewed more than 800 transcripts."

The NCAA's Committee on Infractions accepted the school's proposed scholarship reductions in football and men's and women's track. A violation also was found in the women's swimming program, but the swimmer involved was not on scholarship, so that program was not penalized with a scholarship reduction.

There were no TV or bowl restrictions placed on the football program.

Georgia Tech already reduced its 2005 football signing class by six and also will reduce its 2006 signing class by six.

The NCAA added a limit of 79 total grants-in-aid for the 2006-07 and 2007-08 academic years in football, down from the normal limit of 85. Georgia Tech's self-imposed reduction of scholarships this year did not include a corresponding overall limit on scholarships.

Also, the NCAA vacated Tech's records in the sports between the 1998-99 and 2004-05 academic years and issued a public reprimand and censure.

Gene Marsh, a law professor at Alabama who chaired the investigating committee, said Tech's registrars and academic advisers were inadequately trained in NCAA regulations.

Marsh said the committee concluded the "institutional failure" to train the employees on NCAA rules "constitutes a non-debatable lack of institutional control."

Marsh said the committee was influenced by the fact some of the 11 football players, who were not named, were stars.

"Many of these student-athletes were prominent members of the team, including multiple-year starters who had received conference and national recognition for their athletic performances," Marsh said.

"It is impossible to say what part it played, but it did play a part," Marsh said.

Marsh said the committee found six student-athletes were allowed to count grades of D for satisfactory progress even though their majors required grades of C or better. Four were allowed to continue in athletics despite lacking the necessary percentage of degree requirements.

Since its first game on January 30th 1892, #UGA has an overall record of 768-406-54 (.647). Good enough for 10th most wins in #NCAA history.

This abundance of enthusiasm is a good sign because it means the players are gaining confidence in themselves as well as the coaches and the team over all. The athletic talent is there to be a very good team. If the main cogs can stay healthy, UGA should be in Atlanta for the SECCG this year I think. SC is probably the biggest road block to a trip there, but they are going to be breaking in a lot of new folks at critical positions, so it should be a good game. UGA has some players that last year on defense were lost on the field when playing but with a year under their belt, and a new coach on defense that I believe will utilize his personnel better,  we could see some players emerge as big time players on the field. I think the offense will be just fine and will put some points up on the board and hopefully, will not place the defense in a difficult position too often. Basically, UGA has a mostly veteran offense and a relatively new defense. I hope the team is pretty balanced out there and if that is the case, UGA has a chance at a very good season.

I just hope injuries don't eat up the team like they did last year. I think Mason is a decent QB for sure but he is not going to be a Murray, and nobody should expect him to be. If he doesn't ut undue pressure on himself, to try and prove he can play as good as Murray, he is perfectly capable of managing the offense, and helping put up the points. He has a big role to fill though, as he has to become that team leader on offense as well as gain the confidence of the young guys with him. He seems mature enough to me, to be avle to do that.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Students are not imagining it if they think it's harder to get in to Georgia Tech.

Those admitted for next fall boast an average 3.9 GPA and a 1430 out of 1600 on the math and verbal SAT. By high school graduation these students would have taken an average of eight college-level courses, such as Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate.

About 14,700 students applied for one of the 2,400 spots for fall or the 250 spots for this summer. The admitted class represents 86 countries and 49 states. No one from Wyoming was admitted.

The University of Georgia is scheduled to announce admission decisions by April 1.

“Special admits” and college admissions

The Indianapolis Star newspaper recently posted an article regarding “special admits” to colleges.  So called “special admits” refers to the preferences given to athletic recruits that would not normally meet admissions standards.  While there is nothing surprising about the fact that colleges use different standards for some athletes, the interesting point is the degree of preference given.

The newspaper studied 55 of the countries largest public universities and found that the preferences given to special admits at many schools was disproportionately favoring athletes, particularly football players. For example, in 2004 the University of California reported that 95% of freshman football players on scholarship were special recruits while 47% of all freshman athletes on scholarships were special admits.  In contrast, only 2% of all freshman students were special admits. At the University of Georgia and Texas A&M University, 94% of freshman football players were special admits.

The process of using special admits is something that students who may apply to those colleges need to know about, particularly if their grades and test scores are lower than the average for those schools.  While these colleges may except students with lower grades and test scores, many of those admissions slots are going to recruited athletes, leaving little room for non athletes.

Not all colleges use special admits and the study found that many universities did not use any special admits. For a breakdown of which of the nation’s largest public universities use special admits look at the table put together by the newspaper.

@Dawg350  Now the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has gone ahead and quantified that by comparing average SAT scores and grade-point averagesGPAs of athletes with the rest of the college's student body. Not surprisingly, football and men's basketball players came out on the bottom, and some averaged hundreds of points lower on SATs than their classmates.

The Journal-Constitution studied 54 public universities, "including the members of the six major Bowl Championship Series conferences and other schools whose teams finished the 2007-08 season ranked among the football or men's basketball top 25."

We all suspect that big-time student athletes sometimes aren't the best and the brightest academically.

Some highlights:

  • Football players average 220 points lower on the SAT than their classmates. Men's basketball was 227 points lower.
  • University of Florida won the prize for biggest gap between football players and the student body, with players scoring 346 points lower than their peers.
  • Georgia Tech had the nation's best average SAT score for football players, 1028 of a possible 1600, and best average high school GPA, 3.39 of a possible 4.0. But because its student body is apparently very smart, Tech's football players still scored 315 SAT points lower than their classmates.
  • UCLA, which has won more NCAA championships in all sports than any other school, had the biggest gap between the average SAT scores of athletes in all sports and its overall student body, at 247 points.

Some "universal truths," according to the Journal-Constitution:

All 53 schools for which football SAT scores were available had at least an 88-point gap between team members' average score and the average for the student body.

Schools with the highest admissions standards, such as Georgia Tech, the University of Virginia, the University of California-Berkeley, UCLA, and the University of North Carolina, had the biggest gaps between the SAT averages for athletes and the overall student body.

Football players performed 115 points worse on the SAT than male athletes in other sports.

The differences between athletes' and non-athletes' SAT scores were less than half as big for women (73 points) as for men (170).

Many schools routinely used a special admissions process to admit athletes who did not meet the normal entrance requirements. More than half of scholarship athletes at the University of Georgia, the University of Wisconsin, Clemson University, UCLA, Rutgers University, Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University were special admits. . . At Georgia, for instance, 73.5 percent of athletes were special admits compared with 6.6 percent of the student body as a whole.

At a glance, here are the top 10 highest and lowest schools based on the average SAT scores of football players (out of a maximum 1600 score):

Give me some statistics about how many were told they couldn't attend because of their race?  That would be appropriate but you won't be able to find that.  If it happened there would be lawsuits.

@POAD2013 @Dawgs88 A decent post destroyed by using words like plantation, slavery, "not bright", and " idiots. " Now POAD, print out and show these statements to black athletes at the Institute. I'm pretty confident they would agree with you calling members of their community "not bright" and "idiots." Some of them are relatives and former teammates. If you don't like UGA then fine go somewhere else. Because the only classless moron I see on this page is you. Quit acting like a tough guy behind a keyboard and get a freaking life. Most standard public colleges across the country are predominantly white stupid. In fact where are the lowest test scoring sections in the state genius? Oh yeah the black areas, especially inner city Atlanta. Last time I checked UGA did not write or control those tests so yeah you're an idiot. UGA ranks in the top 50 of public schools in terms of quality education year after year after year. So drop dead you wuss.

POAD2013

@NCDawg NEVER even considered UGa. I didn't apply at TECH. I wanted something different. The Citadel, VMI, North Georgia, USAFA, USNA and USMA. I didn't have the grades to have Senators back me at the Service Academies. You have to be a 4.0 kinda guy from 8th grade all the way through. Finishing with a 3.8 in Military High School was not enough for the service academies.

All Hail the FLAGSHIP University of Georgia....LMAO.

@POAD2013 : What year did you graduate from Tech?  Thats right you didn't.  Most Tech grads realize UGA isn't the dump you make it out to be academically, in fact there are several students at Tech that couldn't get into UGA.  Since the inception of the HOPE scholarship, UGA has become a perennial university on the US News and World Report top public schools.  You hate on the academics at UGA but this isn't an academic blog, its a sports blog.  You are a sidewalk fan so stick to sports and lay off the academics since you didn't actually attend GT.

GT and UGA are both fine schools, and yes GT is a higher rated school academically, but it is far more important what you do with you degree when you leave than posting high SAT scores.
