Mason, Green among standouts in Dogs’ first scrimmage of spring

By Chip Towers

ATHENS – Scrimmages are a tricky thing to gauge. If the offense does well, then it was a bad day for the defense and vice versa.

So it’s probably a good thing when the general consensus among the Bulldogs and their coach was that Saturday’s controlled scrimmage at Sanford Stadium would have to be considered a draw.

“There were highs and lows on both sides, which I guess is good,” said senior receiver Chris Conley, who caught back-to-back touchdown passes from Hutson Mason. “That’s something you want to see. There was competitiveness on both sides by everyone. I can’t really pick a true winner of the day. I guess Georgia won.”

The scrimmage was closed to media and to the public. Following is a quick rundown of the “unofficial stats” as provided by UGA. I’ll be filing a report for the newspaper and AJC.com with more details and reaction:
RUSHING

Hutson Mason 3-15
Kyle Karempelis 8-15 TD

RECEIVING

It's surprising that you don't have more articles on the AJC for both UGA and GT football at this time. College football is serious bidness or should be. Chip must have another job to make ends meet.

@ Thomas Brown - where in my post did I say I wanted the Dawgs to be in 3rd and 6? I made a point that when they are in 3rd and 6 I would rather see a short pass to move the chains than to see an incomplete pass 20 yards down the field. Since you are the stat guy how many of those 3rd and 6's were a result of 2 runs for 4 yards or 1 run for 4 yards and an incomplete pass? I'll hang up and listen.

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! It's a great morning to be a Georgia Bulldog! Our dawgs are to make us very proud this year whether they win it all or not. Which I think they we will. Will friend is working hard to get the OL up to speed. If we can run the ball more consistently in the red zone. Then our little doggies are going to be national champions! Look at the sugar falling out of the sky! Look at the sugar falling out of the sky! Hallelujah!

"From my observations over the last several years I would have loved to see a few more check downs by Murray on 3rd downs to keep the chains moving as opposed to throwing the ball 20 yards at times when we needed 5 or 6 yards for a first down."

If we ran the ball more, in this pass-happy offense only running when the game is in-hand, we would not have been # 53 in the nation on 3rd Down Conversions with a 5th-year Redshirt Senior QB.  The answer is not have a weak-armed floating his passes, even on short -to-intermediate throws, check-down to yet more passes, thebucket.  So while your observations have been correct, the solution is NOT throw even more passes.  Jeez Louise.  We'd better establish the run early, wear down our opposing defenses, and get into short makeable 3rd Downs - not 6-yard passes on 3rd Downs.

That's what we've been doing, getting into 3rd Down and 6.  That's a win for their defense, and it puts our Defense back out there, tired, to bail-out Our Offense you've observed over the last several years, failing to convert on 3rd Down, thebucket, sir.

It's football 101.  I wonder sometimes, really, if any of you ever played the game.

3rd Down and 6 is exactly what we tried to achieve as a Defense.  Precisely our goal on every play to get to 3rd Down and 6.

We could pin our ears back, cause Fumbles trying to do too much, trying to flash-in and get sacks, cause forced throws into our coverage looking for the pass to gain more interceptions.

Precisely as this old-fashioned fullback-centric without any fullbacks recruited with over 200 available every year, pass-happy offense of Mark Richt and Mike Bobo has ALWAYS done.

Whoosh    !

That's the sound of this going right over your head, again, thebucket, sir.

The title of this article says 'Mason, Green among standouts', then does not even mention them.

This was a huge waste of my time.

Mark Schlabach writes some weird statements, always has.  He held this job here at the AJ-C long before Chip Towers.  He has been with ESPN for sometime, and writes back-to-back articles on our plight without discussion of our schedule, unlike the # 62 Strength of Schedule including beating # 2 Auburn of FSU.  Then, he makes the statement about Blake Tibbs, whom Mike Bobo thought so much of last seasons' 13 games of 8-5, to throw the football, given all the injuries to the WR, twice.  UGA coaches, read as Mike Bobo, said that Blake Tibbs has looked good, which explains why we threw the ball 2-times to the sure-handed receiver before he came to us from Lithonia.

Mark Bradley and Jeff Schultz both wrote articles on baseball, where the Braves picked-up where they left off paying all these big bucks to players who cannot hit or field.  BJ Upton went 0-4, Freeman batting 3rd in the line-up also went 0-4, and batting clean-up Johnson went 1-4.  Jason Heyward, it must be pointed-out, is not a lead-off hitter, and never will be.

Dan Uggla went 0-4 as well.

Gattis, our new designed catcher went 0-4.

What are the headlines ?  Braves picked to win their division it reads, small print 4 of 44 picked Braves to win division.

Not much difference from the Braves, looking at Mark Richt's 2nd half of his career here, is there ?

Won't bother to read Mark Bradley or Jeff Schultz, having listened to the game in the downtown traffic jam Northbound with 2 cars spun-out in the fence.

Schlabach, if you have something to say about The Bulldogs 2014, try something about all the top 10 teams we play, while everyone else doesn't.

BTW Thomas, are you Todd Grantham's agent? It is quite odd that someone who knows as much about football as you seem to think you do constantly harps against the recording setting offense while the defense gets a pass from you.

@ThomasBrown Good Morning Sunshine! I see your up first thing this morning letting thebucket as well as all of us know how much smarter you are than the rest of the world. At least you posted 6 paragraphs without taking a shot at The Jackets. You know that old brand of football we played is why Nick Saban has lost 2 in a row, the times they are a changing, kind of funny, you hate Trch and they establish the run every game. Hate on baby!!

The rest of us wanted to know 4 days' ago when we last had a blog about Spring Practice 2 weeks' old now, exactly that which this article 4 days' ago said that JJ Green led the defense in tackles with 7 including a sack we don't get many of, and the QB in question Hutson Mason distanced the 3 not-ready-for-prime time, duh, behind him with12 of 18 for 152 yards, no interceptions, and 2 TD passes.  Did you miss it Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday 4 days' time Woofer, sir ?

Dan Uggla may not be hitting since he became a Brave but his fielding has been outstanding!!!!!

Once again you have filled these pages with A M A  T E U R I S H  hogwash that 88% of America already knew.

This country is in about the same shape as Notre Dame was against Alabama starting the 2nd half. Their plan was to play hard and try and get the score to look respectable in the end. After 50 years of LBJ's Great Slacking Society  this show is about over.

Maybe when Obama turns 60 he will try to undo some of his multitudes of screw-ups!!!!!! He will still be in office you know.

I am apologizing to Jimmy Carter for calling him the "Worst President In History".

My biggest concern at the moment is not having this F U L L B L O W N   B A T S H _ _ C R A Z Y, U N Q U A L I  F I E D   AZZ    we have sitting in the White House but rather the fact that this once great country re-elected him to a second term.  If that doesn't scare all of you Heaven help you!!!!!!!!
