Taylor’s famous flea-flicker TD vs. Bama in ’65 still a classic

By Chip Towers

ATHENS – In honor of Bob Taylor, who passed away this past Thursday at the age of 70, we share with you Georgia’s version of the Famous Flea Flicker play.

Taylor’s late touchdown led the Bulldogs to an 18-17 upset of the defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide in 1965. It remains one of the greatest plays in UGA history.

Of course, Alabama folks see the play a little differently. Coach Bear Bryant was certain Pat Hodgson’s knee was down before he lateraled to the reversing Taylor and this replay indicates that might have happened. But those were the days before instant replay and overrule by review. And so it shall always stand as a touchdown and a Georgia ‘W.’

Anybody notice that Alabama's #40, the last man chasing Bob into the end zone, had a white helmet? In fact, several had white helmets. What's up with that?

Watched it in a Tallahassee, FL, barber shop. The place went crazy when UGA scored.

Was not born yet either.  But I did sit on the bank at the '76 Alabama game when we shut them out.  We won but my dad lost his job for printing those tickets.  Joel Eaves said they looked real.

Anybody notice that Alabama's players, instead of shaking hands, simply ran off the field?

I really enjoyed that video, i was a QB and i always referred to that play as "The Hook and Ladder" that was executed perfectly.

@harooki2  Those indicate KKK members probably since white hoods are not allowed. Those bama boys gotta represent.

Speaking of bama and the backwards culture of their fans, school, football team....I wonder if Sims will get to start since Coker is sucking eggs in fall camp.

When you commit to winning like Bama does and.lise you get a little pissy. Look at Mccarron...All those steroids and paid players and to lose like that....He just ran off the field.

@MaxSizemore I didn't, but i have been legally drunk for a while now.And i wouldn't have wanted to run over and shake your hand either. Good Grief.

@gtcaryd  That's what I said when I saw the play! I was looking for a handoff to rb and a pitch back to QB, but instead I saw what we called "Hook and Ladder".

@ThomasBrownUGA  A DGD, Bob Taylor, has passed away. Chip is honoring his memory by showing the video that features the play that Taylor became famous for. Are you so narcissistic that you believe history began when you were born? Show a little class and honor those who came before us or refrain from commenting when the story isn't up to your elite standards.

Was that one of your legit National titles that year or one of the ones you made up?

Yes, he is narcissistic.

No, he does not have class.

No, he will not refrain from commenting stupidly, insensitively, dishonestly, arrogantly, angrily, condescendingly, etc.

And his "standards" are about as far from elite as they can be.
