Update: Dogs’ TE Jay Rome hobbled during Sunday’s practice

ATHENS – A quick update from Sunday’s practice, Georgia’s third of the preseason:

Don’t read too much into it at this stage, but tight end Jay Rome had to come out of drills and get some attention from trainers due to his troublesome right foot. The junior from Valdosta had off-season foot surgery and actually had been somewhat of a surprise going nearly full tilt in the Bulldogs’ first two practices of camp. He appeared to be going full out again Sunday when he came off the field limping considerably. Head trainer Ron Courson rushed to Rome’s aid, consulted with him [More]

ATHENS – I’ll be filing a detailed report later today that you’ll be able to read on MyAJC.com about Georgia’s off-season disciplinary issues and the Bulldogs’ reactions to them. But in the meantime I wanted to go ahead and share what Georgia coach Mark Richt and some of his players had to say about it at UGA’s Preseason Football Media Day on Friday.

Richt was unflinching and unapologetic in answering the media’s questions about whether the Bulldogs’ have a discipline problem.

ATHENS – OK, I’ll be filing a more comprehensive report on Georgia’s second scrimmage of the spring practice. All or parts of it will be posted on AJC.com and MyAJC.com a little later and, of course, you can read the whole thing in the Sports section of the Sunday newspaper.

But here’s a quick rundown and a couple of videos to watch to get an idea of what happened:

The offense played much, much better than it did last week, particularly running the football.

Quarterback Hutson Mason, tailback Todd Gurley, receiver Jonathan Rumph and kicker Marshall Morgan starred for the offense.

Linebacker Ramik Wilson, [More]

Q&A: Kevin Sherrer on J.J. Green and leaving sweet home Alabama

  • 12:17 pm Thursday, April 3rd, 2014 by Chip Towers

ATHENS – Kevin Sherrer is an Alabama man through and through. He was born in Oneonta, Ala., starred as a tight end at Cleveland (Ala.) High, played that position at the University of Alabama (1993-95) and was a grad assistant for the Crimson Tide. Since then he coached at two Alabama high schools, then was the director of player development at Bama before serving last year as the defensive coordinator at South Alabama.

So while he’s moved a bunch the last 18 years, he hasn’t ventured across the state line very much until now. Sherrer came east to join his old [More]
