Ten@10: ESPN’s Herbstreit believes Gurley could still win Heisman

THE TEN AT 10

1. I had a chance to talk to ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit this morning, which I always enjoy.

I first met “Herbie” in December of 1992 when I interviewed him as the Ohio State quarterback in the days leading up to the Buckeyes’ matchup against Georgia in the 1993 Citrus Bowl. We laughed about that Tuesday morning and his memory of that Bulldogs’ team — and that 21-14 Georgia victory — remains incredibly vivid. He rattled off the names of Garrison Hearst, Mitch Davis, Eric Zeier and Andre Hastings and talked about what they did in that game like [More]

Rewind: Mark Richt on fatherhood and those issues in secondary

MONDAY MORNING REWIND

1. I went to Norcross on Saturday to catch coach Mark Richt and his friends in the first All Pro Dad Live event at the Long Forum on the Greater Atlanta Christian School campus.

It was a very impactful event with some very impressive speakers, including former NFL coach Tony Dungy, Fox News anchor Bret Baier, NFL executives Mark Dominick and Troy Vincent and former star athletes Charlie Ward and Danny Wuerffel, among others. Of course, comedian Jeff Foxworthy also was there and he brought down the house as usual. Foxworthy was equal parts hilarious and profound in talking [More]

MONDAY MORNING REWIND

I’m driving over to Birmingham this morning for SEC Football Media Days, which commence just after lunch with Commissioner Mike Slive’s annual address. It’s expanding to a four-day event this year because, you know, it just hasn’t been big enough in the past.

More than 1,100 media credentials have been issued this year. There will be at least four of us AJC guys among the throng. That’s counting the illustrious Tony Barnhart, who is resurrecting his “Mr. College Football” blog on AJC.com this year. He will provide at least three updates this week.

My initial assignment was to interview former [More]

I’m actually on vacation this week, as well as half of the civilized world as it appears to me. But I didn’t want to deprive anyone of their fundamental right to read “The Ten at 10.” So I slapped this together. Hope you enjoy, and happy Independence Day everyone! …

THE TEN AT 10:

1. Hope you got a chance to read the feature story I wrote recently on tight end Jay Rome. The junior from Valdosta finally appears to be close to healthy and he predicted he would be ready to play on Aug. 31 against Clemson. With the [More]

Russell Henley, Honda Classic, golf, pga

MONDAY MORNING REWIND

ATHENS – The Year of the Dog continues in professional golf.

Russell Henley became the latest Georgia Bulldog to have his named etched into a trophy on the PGA Tour. Henley, who played for the Bulldogs from 2008-11, became the fourth UGA letterman to record a victory on the tour this season on Sunday when he bested Rory McIlroy and two others in a playoff at the Honda Classic. Henley tapped in a two-foot birdie putt on the first play-off hole, a par 5, to claim the win over McIlroy, Ryan Palmer and Scotland’s Russell Knox.
