Mark Fox likes UK tonight, says NCAA Tournament ‘validates SEC is pretty good’

Atlanta Journal-Constitution recruiting reporter Michael Carvell talked to Georgia basketball coach Mark Fox on Monday for some recruiting stories he’s working on. But while he had him on the phone he asked him about tonight’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game between Kentucky and UConn.

Shockingly, Fox likes the SEC’s Wildcat’s in that game.

“I’ve got my SEC pom poms on,” Fox said. “I’m sticking with the SEC.”

“I actually told our team when Kentucky beat us in the (SEC tournament) semifinals,‘If they shoot the 3 well and they play like that, they can win the national championship.’ It really comes down to if [More]

8 things to consider about today’s Georgia-Kentucky SEC tournament semifinal

Greetings from the Georgia Dome, where I have spent most of my waking existence the past few days. Not complaining. It has been exciting, and the Georgia Bulldogs are certainly having a blast.

The Bulldogs survived another thriller against Ole Miss in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament late last night. Charles Mann made a lay-up off an offensive rebound with 17 seconds remaining, the Rebels’ Marshall Henderson missed the 14th of his 16 3-point attempts with about 5 seconds remaining and Marcus Thornton made a final free throw with 3.9 seconds to go as Georgia held on for a gritty [More]

UGA’s feisty Fox ‘sick of ‘Catlanta’ and RPI projections

As coaches go, Georgia’s Mark Fox is a pretty mild-mannered guy. When it comes to commentary about his team and basketball issues, he usually takes a reserved and measured approach and leaves you thinking it probably feels a little stronger than he lets on.

But it was a considerably more feisty Fox that reporters encountered Wednesday afternoon as the Bulldogs had their first and only interview availability before their Friday night appearance in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament.

Fox was relatively outspoken on a myriad of topics, not the least of which was his team’s NCAA tournament at-large chances. The general [More]

Georgia Bulldogs, college basketball, SEC

Listening in on the SEC men’s basketball coaches teleconference call this morning, it was clear that a lot of the league’s coaches are impressed with what Georgia did this season and many expect the Bulldogs to make some noise in the conference tournament this week at the Georgia Dome.

The Bulldogs (18-12, 12-6 SEC) won eight of their last 10 games – including 69-61 over LSU in Baton Rouge on Saturday – to finish in a tie for second with Kentucky. They’ll enter the SEC tournament as the No. 3 seed and open play late Friday night against Ole Miss, Mississippi [More]

Mark Fox draws praise of peers during Bulldogs’ historic SEC run

ATHENS – Coach of the year kind of stuff.

That’s what we saw from Georgia’s Mark Fox this season. Yes, Florida went 18-0 in SEC play and the Gators’ are the nation’s No. 1-ranked team. There is no arguing that Billy Donovan will be deserving of that award and any others that will likely come his way.

But for good, old fashioned, roll-up-your-sleeves, quality hard work amid difficult circumstances, there are very few coaches anywhere who can claim to have done a better job that than Fox.

Only longtime observers of Georgia basketball can probably fully appreciate what his team managed to accomplish [More]
