Richt: Don’t read too much into UGA’s depth chart

  • 3:15 pm Tuesday, August 26th, 2014 by Chip Towers

ATHENS – Peppered with questions about some unexpected names and unusual alignments on Georgia’s depth chart for Saturday’s game against Clemson, coach Mark Richt offered a qualifier during his news conference Tuesday.

“This depth chart, I wouldn’t go too crazy about it right now to be honest with you,” Richt said. “I don’t even know if it’s worth writing anything right now.”

The primary focus of queries centered on the status of sophomore Tim Kimbrough (career 5 tackles), who was listed ahead of preseason All-SEC senior Ramik Wilson at “Mike” inside linebacker. Little-used junior Devin Bowman is also slated as the starter [More]

Ten@10: All 5 Georgia tailbacks will play against Clemson

  • 9:55 am Tuesday, August 26th, 2014 by Chip Towers

THE TEN AT 10:

1. Georgia’s ballyhooed freshman tailbacks Nick Chubb and Sony Michel will both play against Clemson this Saturday. How many actual rushing attempts they get – if any – remains to be seen.

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, echoing what running backs coach Bryan McClendon said on 680 the Fan’s “Bulldog Roundtable” radio show this past Friday, confirmed that all five scholarship tailbacks in Georgia’s offensive arsenal will get playing time in the opener.

“The game will dictate touches and plays,” Bobo said. “That’s really at any skill position. All five are doing well but we’ll know more (closer to the [More]

Bulldogs begin transition from installation to game-planning

  • 10:48 am Friday, August 8th, 2014 by Chip Towers

ATHENS —  Back over at The Butts this morning (that’s what the players call the football complex). The Bulldogs were back on the field for their second day of two-a-days, their fourth straight day of full pads, their eighth day of practice in a row and their ninth practice overall. Georgia will hold its 10th practice, a closed walk-through session in preparation for tomorrow’s scrimmage, tonight at 7:30 p.m.

At this point, the Bulldogs are pretty much done with playbook installation. They’ll put the finishing touches knowing the playbook this morning, prepare for tomorrow’s scrimmage this evening, then finalize the few [More]

Practice update: Bulldogs embark on first of ‘two-a-day’ practices

  • 9:46 am Wednesday, August 6th, 2014 by Chip Towers

ATHENS – Good morning. I’m back over here at the Butts-Mehre football complex for the first two-a-day session of preseason camp. The Bulldogs’ first practice of the day will be in full pads this morning at 9:30 and the second will be this evening at 7:30 p.m. in “shells.” It’s the first of four two-a-day practices will have this month.

Yesterday’s workout was the first in full pads this year and it was an intense. An Oklahoma drill in the early portion of practice proved somewhat climactic as Georgia went back to its installation work and preparing for Saturday’s all-important first [More]

Ten@10: Once again, injuries becoming part of Bulldogs’ storyline

  • 9:49 am Tuesday, August 5th, 2014 by Chip Towers

THE TEN AT 10:

1. Georgia is just four days into preseason camp and injuries are starting to become part of the 2014 storyline. The latest name added to the list is Shattle Fenteng.

Fenteng, a junior college transfer from Hutchinson Community College, was having his shoulder and arm attended to by head trainer Ron Courson early in Monday’s practice before leaving Woodruff Practice Fields for the day. UGA was unable to supply an injury update after the 90-minute workout and the hope is that there will be one at some point Tuesday.

UPDATE: Defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt says Fenteng’s injury [More]

HOOVER, Ala. – Over the past three days, 24 players, eight coaches and six administrators have taken their turns on the podiums in the grand ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Wynfrey Hotel. On Thursday morning we’ll finally get to hear from coach Mark Richt and the Georgia Bulldogs.

Georgia is the 11th of the SEC’s 14 teams to stand before the microphones and cameras at SEC Football Media Days. Richt will be accompanied by wide receiver Chris Conley, linebacker Ramik Wilson and tailback Todd Gurley.

Ole Miss, Alabama and Kentucky, in that order, will round out what has been a record week [More]

Behold the Georgia Bulldogs’ defensive depth chart

  • 12:55 pm Thursday, July 10th, 2014 by Chip Towers

ATHENS – Georgia has a defensive depth chart.

If that doesn’t seem like news to you, you haven’t been paying attention to the Bulldogs since Jeremy Pruitt took over as defensive coordinator. He left spring practice saying he wouldn’t have a depth chart until Georgia opens the season against Clemson on Aug. 30 and maybe not then. His point: The competition for playing time is ongoing.

So why now? Well, the bottom line is the Bulldogs simply had to have a depth chart to include in their 2014 media guide, which came out this week. I picked up my copy on Thursday.

Ten@10: UGA’s linebackers give Dogs’ defense a chance

  • 9:58 am Tuesday, July 8th, 2014 by Chip Towers

THE TEN AT 10:

1. A lot of folks aren’t sure how good Georgia’s defense will be in 2014, but everybody seems to be fairly certain the Bulldogs’ linebackers are going to be good. And I tend to agree with that.

Three of Georgia’s four linebackers were named to the Bednarik Award watch list released on Monday. Now say what you will about watch lists (more on that later), but the Bednarik trophy is supposed to go to the nation’s best overall defensive player, so Georgia having three representations gives you an idea why the reputable Phil Steele has ranked [More]

Ten@10: Signees report to UGA as summer football workouts begin

  • 9:58 am Tuesday, June 10th, 2014 by Chip Towers

THE TEN AT 10:

1. Believe it or not, there are only 81 days until Georgia kicks off the 2014 football season against the Clemson Tigers at Sanford Stadium. For the Bulldogs, preparations are already well under way.

Sixteen of Georgia’s 20 signees moved into the Oglethorpe House dormitory and enrolled in summer-school classes last week. That group will join the returning players for summer workouts and conditioning later this week.

So where are the four other signees, you might ask? Well, they’re either already in Athens, are on their way, or are not coming.

Quarterback Jacob Park enrolled in January and wide receiver [More]

Mason, Gurley, Morgan star for offense in Dogs’ 2nd scrimmage

  • 1:02 pm Saturday, April 5th, 2014 by Chip Towers

ATHENS – OK, I’ll be filing a more comprehensive report on Georgia’s second scrimmage of the spring practice. All or parts of it will be posted on AJC.com and MyAJC.com a little later and, of course, you can read the whole thing in the Sports section of the Sunday newspaper.

But here’s a quick rundown and a couple of videos to watch to get an idea of what happened:

The offense played much, much better than it did last week, particularly running the football.

Quarterback Hutson Mason, tailback Todd Gurley, receiver Jonathan Rumph and kicker Marshall Morgan starred for the offense.
